Do not use any MS-DOS defrag utility on a windows 9x system. A friend of mine was also complaining his defrag was going to take about 10 years to finish, so he remembered the defrag utility from MS-DOS 6.1 so he booted using a boot disk and ran that.

It defragged his system nice and quick...

And destroyed all the long file names, and most of the short ones too...

And Windows would no longer boot..

And I got dragged in to fix it, as best I could.

It wasn't pretty, I can tell you.
