Naughty,

First off, you can not defrag Win98 from DOS, mainly because there is no true DOS included with Win98, there is a DOS mode, but you can not run defrag from there.

To find out what is running in the background, hit ctrl-alt-delete all at same time Undoubtedly you are going to find a shitload of programs running that you never heard of. The only one that needs to run is explorer. This is not the same as windows explorer, or internet explorer, and I am not going to confuse you with issues, so suffice it to say, you will see a list of files that are open, hi-lite each, one at a time, and click END TASK. You will need to go thru and do each one until the only file left is explorer. Some may need to be done twice, but you will get a response that task ended as each is ended. If you get message that it is busy or some crap, tell it to end immediately.

After you have accomplished this, you will want to run a scandisk, and before you do that, you will want to fix the default settings because they are bullshit.

Go to scandisk, click Type of Test - Standard, and make sure box to auto fix errors is checked, then go to Advanced, and make sure the following options are selected, starting with left column, top to bottom: Always, Append To Log, Delete, Free, Invalid Dates/Times, Check Host drive First. Then hit OK make sure your C drive is selected and hit start. It is important that you do this before running defrag.

For the record, you should do this weekly, once a month go from standard test to thorough test.

After scandisk completes, close it, then open defrag. Again, this should;d be done weekly.

These two programs are called routines, and are as important as changing the oil and spark plugs on your Harley. You have probably had scandisk run when you start up pc because of your improper shutdown last time you shut down. That scandisk is useless, and will never find any problem, so it is mandatory that you run these programs manually, if you want your HDD to have any longevity.
