France did that as part of an ongoing struggle against Britain... not to help "americans". Don't make it sound as if they one day realized that there was some injustice in the world and they bravely decided to champion the cause of the righteous and willfully sacrifice lives.
Every nation acts in it's own self interests. Just as France and the US do today.
War is politics.
