The African-American individuals I have met have always been very friendly and have never given me the impression that they are waiting for me to say something wrong.
My kids pediatrian when they were little was black. He was not only the best pediatrician in the city but he was one of the funniest guys I had ever met. I admired him and trusted him with my the most precious things in my life....to me...I couldn't care less if the guy was green or blue....it was the friendship that developed over the years. There were several very serious medical crisis' we went through over the years, he was always there and my kids benifited from his caring and expertise.
Perhaps you are just meeting people with a chip on their shoulder that would be there no matter what color they were.
