Ahh, videoconferencing, my area of expertise
If you can find some second hand, the 3Com Home Connect webcams were really very good, excellent picture quality. They discontinued it a while ago, probably because it was a premium product in a market dominated by cheap competitors.
However, plenty of current webcams are quite good, such as the
Logitech Quickcams.
As for software, if you're just talking to family and friends, using Microsoft Netmeeting which is bundled with all post-95 versions of Windows will suffice, it has decent picture and sound quality and you can't argue with the price. There are lots of other videoconferencing systems out there aimed at the home user, like cu-seeme, paltalk, seesaw, ivisit, icuii, ipsq and so on. And I'm trying to exploit them one website at a time
