yup, the WIC program is very helpful.
We had to use it with our first kid when I got laid off and it was a huge help for the basics until I landed a new job. We didn't end up needing it for long, but it was a huge help and I figured I paid into the system for years, so taking a little out of the system wasn't a bad thing.
I've done some volunteer work at the local welfare office and always hear bullshit stories about people in Benz' using fooddstamps, but haven't actually seen it with my own eyes. Most are going to the cards now and what would sometimes happen with the old paper foodstamps is they became tender for buying drugs, guns, etc. Someone would take $200 in foodstamps and get $100-150 in cash. The cards have cut down on this a lot. So there are some problems with the foodstamp program, but it does help a lot of people in need....and it doesn't buy them a mercedes ;-)
