If you're going to Ca, try Santa Cruz. You got the ocean on one side with some of the better surfing spots around and the mountains and trees on the other side. few bugs, almost no idiots and red necks, and the drivers aren't as bad as Miami's. Biggest negative is the cost of living but that's true anywhere south of San Francisco.
