'Hunting for Bambi' creator admits Nevada videos were fake

Wednesday, May 26, 2004

(05-26) 09:55 PDT LAS VEGAS (AP) --

The "Hunting for Bambi" creator, who gained national attention last year while promoting the sale of paintball hunts of nude women in the southern Nevada desert, has admitted the whole thing was a scam.

Michael Burdick pleaded guilty Tuesday in Las Vegas Municipal Court to misdemeanor charges of doing business without a license and providing false information to a public official.

Judge Bert Brown fined Burdick $1,105 and gave him a six-month suspended sentence.

Burdick had appeared on national news outlets discussing the so-called hunts, which were available for up to $10,000. Burdick had created a video of the hunts and was selling them on his Web site.

As part of his plea, Burdick acknowledged that claiming the paintball hunts were real was part of an advertising strategy for the videos and apologized for "any embarrassment to the city of Las Vegas caused by such false or misleading promotional activity."

Burdick was silent during his court appearance, only uttering the words "guilty, your honor." He did not answer questions from reporters after Tuesday's hearing.

City officials launched an investigation soon after "Hunting for Bambi" surfaced.

They said Burdick admitted the hunts were fabricated to draw media attention, which drove up sales of the videotapes. Burdick said he offered the hunts at exorbitant prices to scare off anyone interested, officials said.

The city found Burdick, who ran the operation, wasn't listed on the business license for Real Men Outdoor Productions, the company that produced and sold the video. His claims that the hunts were for sale prompted the citation for doing business without a license.
