Yes, the a-bombing of HIroshima & Nagasaki was a huge thing in history, no question. It was done to make Japan stop, period. After the first city was levelled they STILL would not stop so the had to be kicked in the head a second time. It may not be the USA's finest hour, but the event does serve to show the world what utter destructive power even a small nuke can have. I say it's a deterrant.

On the same note, the USA would be braindead not to have a nuclear arsenal ready to defend itself, in light of the fact that at least 10 other countries have them too, including France, Pakistan, certain Russian countries, and it is suspected that countries like Iran, Iraq, Libya and North Korea have nukes as well (or are trying to get them). Criticizing the USA for protecting itself is really stupid, because the second that your country is in a horrible situation they are the first nation that is looked to for help.
