You can find everything you need at a Home Depot, with maybe the exception of a punchdown tool, patch panel, router,... which you should be able to find at a big electronics store like Fry's or Circuit City or something... $35 per hour isn't bad.... but it's still going to be a big bill. Running wire through walls isn't done in an hour or two.

If I were you, I'd try to get your friend's advice and maybe some help, (offer him beer... that always works), but do it yourself if you're confident. Get a book and do some reading.... it's not really that hard... just alot of work. If you're not confident, then definitely give up the green and have a pro do it... it'll be worth it to have it done right.
