For the color pattern don't think of it as a 1-2-3-4 progression, think about symetry. I don't have it right in front of me but look at the top right and bottom left. Think about a diagonal pattern, then apply that to the top left and bottom right. I think it also had something to do with a second pattern regarding the outside halves of the boxes.
