I'm not sure it's fair to say that they are fighting for Islam alone. If you look at the pics coming from Palestine, there are banners saying "change US foreign policy now". Muslim countries are reported to say that they condemn the terrorist actions, but they understand why this happened, and it's because of the wars fought for US self interest that appears to be the motivatiuon there.
Also Bin Ladens personal history seems to have been affected by the wars. He was reportedly furious when Americans were in Saudi Arabia because Saudi Arabia is their holiest land. He also reportedly believes that his victory over the Russians means he can beat the USA as well. Back in '79 the Soviet Union was a pretty happening super power. Bin Laden reckons he was instrumental in the downfall of communism.
Still... who's to know the inner workings of a complete head case?
