I agree to an extent. I wouldn't want to try running 40 sites with just 5 people. If you outsource a bunch of stuff too, yes then maybe. But dealing with properly updating paysites to retain, purchasing content and managing upsells, tech issues and serverside stuff, interfacing with webmasters, marketing, monitoring numbers, dealing with the billing... all these are full time jobs unto themselves if you want to do it right.
I think what you do see happening now is that, as this industry matures, businesses that have been around realize they can't just hire all their buddies or guys/gals who are fun to drink with at a tradeshow if they want to continue to compete. You need people who actually are qualified to do the job they are assigned.
For years this business has been the haven for the slacker dudes - you know the people who always forgot to bring the #2 pencil to the tests. =] It's just not that easy any more. You need people who will work hard AND smart.
