I believe that is not wise to make decisions about ready-made solutions by loking on the worst ones.

I bet to make a turnkey members area based on bullet-proof customized solution with 2+ years history and 200+ paysites running on it, could be a very competitive compared to hired team of programmers or just one programmer who will do a simple bugging piece of code which you will have to pay to support, fix bugs, etc after. It may work somehow, and probably you'd manage to hire a coder from India who will do the job within 1 month for $700 bucks, but as your business grows you will need more, than that person is able to do.
Another choice could be to use a free-source pieces which you may find around. But since it is free source, it is not supported at all, and even if you will manage to configure it to be working, you will be unable to make any changes to it unless hiring a coder who will spend weeks or months understanding the code.
