All you need to know is how much your investment returns ..
I buy a gallery spot for for $100.. the BW costs me $35 .. expense $135
The gallery brings me $335 in sales .. profit = $200
Then I don't give a shit about what the ratio was (which depends 100% of how you make your outgoing links) .. as long as I make $200 with a $135 investment the ratio can be 1:3000 .. I don't care ...
