Well, I'm hardly a guru... in fact, I don't know anything.
Is a tour really necessary for AVS? I always figured the signup schpiel is the best pitch you can give and just crank 'em out with the signup script right on the front page just like yours up there with a preview pic about the same size as you're using on that page. I submit gallerys to TGPs to promote them which have at least 20 pics on them already, so I kinda figured that served as the preview.
??? If this is wrong, somebody speak up now so I can go and make some damn preview pages for all these sites.
I agree on the suckness of the background color. Looks like cat puke. Other than that, it's not much different than what I make every day.
