yes, they are very good for traveling.
there are many different uses, for street travel in USA, a laptop, the usa street software, and the delorme serial connection gps is very good.
for aviation and boating i think garmin is the best.
if you are just looking for a cheap gps with a map go to ebay and get a garmin emap or etrax---very good 12 channel receiver---works best with external antenna in the car.
