One of the prickish things about Vai was an incedent a few years back when I worked on a video shoot for him, the one with a bunch of kids in a classroom and what not. (I was just a lowly PA)
The shoot had been going all day and into the evening and the kids were tired and some of the parents were getting pissed so he let them take a break.
A girl was around the set who was a relative of one of the kids in the video, and she loved Vai. She was a little "slow" and you could tell by her appearance so.
When everyone was on break, Steve was just sitting there and the brother of this girl asked him if he could take a picture of him with his sister coz she was a big fan. Vai said sure but make it fast. They stood there and posed, and the brother snapped her little camera, and the flash didn't go off. He said, shoot, lemme try again, the flash didn't go off. Steve said "sorry, you only get one chance" and walked over to a chair and sat down.
The girl cried and I thought it was pretty lame.
By the end of the shoot everyone hated his guts.
I do enjoy his playing though.
