I just watched it last night, and can say it was worth a rental. It was enjoyable from a cultural and cinematography standpoint. The rendering of 1876 Japan was fun to watch. It may make you want to buy a Katana and study the Bushido.

The conveyance of Tom Cruise's character as a tortured "indian killer" was over the top. How many flashbacks did they need? We get it already. Also, the Braveheart-style battle at the ending was a bit tedious - as the inevitable onslaught continued on and on and on ...
