true, you will get more 2nd page hits if you don't scroll.
but let's suppose that you have a very niche website, and within your visitor section you have lots of high quality sample content that will only appeal to that niche, and this content is heavy, BW wise.
then it makes sense to scroll your index page---so that the surfer is forced to wade through some stuff (qualifying stuff) before he clicks the enter button. this increases your conversion ratio.

This is the second page. I should have been more clear on that. I will have a splash/warning/enter/qualifying page on the main url, and when the surfer clicks to enter he/she will go to this page. From this page they will go to a join page.
