My son was surfing the net every night of his horny life....and when we got the phone bill from madagascar....it was for over 500.00.
My husband is computer savvy..I am somewhat computer savvy...nowhere did we ever find where he got disconnected and then reconnected to some island off the coast of Africa. We refused to pay the bill....as it should be. Isn't this why dialers must now ask if you want to download them?
In medicine, it's called informed consent. It should be here, too.
At no time should anyone be disconnected without permission. I love dialers. We make a nice chunk of change from them. But, if it's done behind the scenes, deceptively...then, I don't think it's a good idea and the FTC will continue to stay involved.
If you put a box up and ask them to "click here for instant download" and take off the word "free" , then I think dialers are great.
Otherwise, people are getting billed by the thousands...and they had no clue they were being reconnected to a long distance charge.
By the way, AT&T were very nice about not billing us. But, they did say they only offer this courtesy once. I told them, if this ever happened again, they would offer it more than once because I will never pay for anything done in such a way as to take away my power to say no.
