Restoring the reg from backups only work as long as you haven't rebooted 5 times. Each reboot rotates the backups down the list. You *can* reset this to hold more than 5 backups, but I don't remember how.
Setting it higher is a good idea since most people seem to want to try a reboot several times to fix a problem. You could reboot yourself right out of a viable copy!
