Another vote for the Venice Beach scene (I used to live on the beach there), and for the Getty Museum. They're both free things to do, so what the hell.

A walk along Abbot Kinney street in Venice Beach is a local's trip back through the 60's (ask for directions; it's not too touristy). Marina Del Rey is just a few miles south, and offers many docks to wander around. To the North is Santa Monica, and although the peir and 3rd St. promenade are touristy, they're safe areas to wander around.

Head up Highway 1 to see Malibu and a wonderful twisting ocean-view road. East on Hollywood or Sunset Bl. will take you to the freak show that is Hollywood.

Have fun!
