You're wrong. If you believe in God, something shitty has happened to YOU my friend. That's why you need to look for something besides yourself to believe in.
Now there's two different scenarios. Either your parents raised you to be that way and you don't know any better, or you hit rock bottom and no longer believe in yourself. You turn to an external source for help, be it your dependency on God, drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, you name it. It's all in the same category. It's called: you don't have control of your life.
