Its cheaper to launch DDoS attacks than sending Vito and Little Nick to bust some kneecaps. I seen some of the extortion letters to London Bookies before the Super Bowl demanding $10K or they won't be able to take any bets.
Several of these shops don't know how to fend off these attacks, and would much rather pay out the money, many are embarrassed to call the police saying they are getting extortion letters, some consider it just part of doing business online.
I have to take a meeting, but I will dig around my laptop for one of those letters later.
