DVD format storing MPEG2/AVI

Question for video editing people. I create VHS movies from MiniDV's. I take the raw video which was shot on MiniDV, and render it onto the computer. After editing, I render the videos as .avi A current movie will be around 45 minutes and around 9 gigs in avi format.

My question is this. DVD RW's hold 4.7 gigs and 120 minutes. What format would that be in. Is mpeg2 the correct format to store the movies onto DVD's? Is mpeg2 format the correct quality for dvd's and VHS? My main concern is storing all the movies on DVD as backups but I want to maintain the quality of the movies that could be used to create new VHS's. Any links to information would be great.
thanks
