When I first saw the poll results, I didn't understand how 1/3 of the people could answer anything other than "Anyone who fucks someone for money is a prostitute". After giving it some thought, I think I've figured it out!
Some people need to believe that having sex on film makes them "actors" or "actresses" instead of prostitutes. Without this illusion, they mentally wouldn't be able to handle doing their jobs. When production companies or scouts successfully convince a new model that she's "acting" instead of hooking, they gain access to a much wider pool of talent.
The money circle needs to go like this: Production companies always need new talent. While some models are naturally attracted to this business, others need some reassurance that what they're doing isn't wrong. When models are convinced that what they are doing is something they can be proud of (modeling/acting) instead of something they would feel ashamed of (hooking), people who would never consider becoming hookers are now available to be paid for sex. This allows for much more variety and more attractive talent than is available in the general escort/prostitute market.
