Be careful when considering this...

1. ADSL/CABLE
as said, most providers don't allow servers. And the circuit is very, very unreliable.

2. LEASED LINE (T1/T3 for home use) :
as said, stick with a paid host, because :
a. major hosting companies have multiple circuits to ensure redundancy. If circuit A drops, B and C will keep the business going;
b. you'll need a UPS and power generator to survive power outages;
c. if you're planning to install more machines, your temperature may run out of control. Airco needed;
d. If you have a T1 line, your max. upstream is 1.5Mbps. Meaning your uploads won't go any faster. Hosting companies have circuits up to 155Mbps or higher. Meaning your upload speed can boost to the max. of your server speed when needed. Useful at peak moments;
e. You probably have no contract with a hardware vendor. Hosting companies have them, which makes the servers etc a lot cheaper.

Consider and reconsider. Many have tried this, but I would be very careful if uptime is important...
