that is how it was done. The Trojans saw them building the horse, they just did not know it was going to be hollow and filled with soldiers.
In fact, as I recall, there was one Trojan that did not trust it, and wanted to check it out, but some chick dissuaded him or the majority, and they went ahead and brought it inside the walls.
I have not read the Illiad in a while, and the Odyssey only touches on it very briefly.
