Electroshock Therapy Makes a Comeback

Thursday, April 15, 2004

LOS ANGELES ? More patients are turning to electroshock therapy again for the treatment of depression (search) and other mental illnesses when medications and traditional psychotherapy have failed them.

With the advent of drugs like Prozac, electroconvulsive therapy (search), or ECT, saw a decline beginning in the 1960s. But thanks to advances that have made it more humane and less risky, the treatment has made a significant comeback in recent years.

About 100,000 patients in the U.S. undergo ECT for depression and other psychiatric illnesses each year.

Critics of the convulsion-inducing therapy argue that it?s unclear exactly how the electric currents affect the brain and worry about the probability that patients will suffer from amnesia (search).

Proponents say the memory loss is temporary and the risks of living with untreatable depression or other mental problems are far greater than those of shock therapy.
