Whoreans dont get SBLive. Actually you should get it, you can use all those free soundfonts on the web - so it's one of the cheapest samplers available! But besides that also get a dedicated recording card - Gina, Layla, whatever - they differ in the number of inputs outputs and price. Quality should be the same as they're all 24 bits. Gina would be cheaper. Later on you'll need a mixer, to plugin the outputs from all your synths and modules and mics into and that mixer will output into the soundcard. A mixer also has preamps that will increase your mic volume for much clearer vocals. But forget about that now.
Elvis, I dont know about Producer Pack, but since he already has soundforge and acid all he should need is Cubase. Soundforge comes with some Direct X effects so you'll have a lot of reverbs, delays, flanges, choruses etc. to keep you busy till you go in for a dedicated hardware effects processor. But firstly you need a midi comptible music keyboard to play with - thats the first thing you need else you'll turn into another of those software musicians that cant play anything. Zzounds.com has some pretty cheap Yamaha stuff going out right now you might check it out. And you'll also need a small midi interface to link your keyboard to your comp, should be cheap.
I do electronica, dance and new age, with vocals. For R&B I think most people use the Akai MPC 2000. That has its own sequencer and beat thingie so you would not even need a comp, tho its better to output everything to comp and mix it there. That thing costs over 2000$ tho, and you'll need a lot of sample CDs to go with it.
