Magic Johnson is using the tritherapy ( the protease inhibitors). The tritherapy stops the viral replication, but it does not eradicate it from the human body. Right now, it's the best treatment to keep the viral load extremely low. The problem is, around 20% of people infected with HIV does not respond to the treatment. The virus is getting stronger, so unless they find a vaccine, they still need to find new drugs.
