From what I have heard, the guys at AWS are successful TGP'ers and make their money through paid submissions and banner spots on the Hun. The top gallery listings are usually paid ones and I have seen some of their galleries (most of them are movie galleries) and they are pretty good.
One of the guys even posted his stats on AWI a while ago and they were pretty impressive.
