i think it depends entirely on your personality. do you really want to work on your own? are you ready, willing or able to accept 100% responsibility for everything including the risks that go with?

i dont think its so much a choice as it is the fact that we are forced to that choice by our personalities and characters. people who are non-conformists, suffer from attention deficit disorder, narcissistic (or other emotional problems) typically can't work well with others.

people who are easily contented and value a percieved sense of safety and security over the percieved risks of self employment would be more likely to work for others.

if your goal is to build wealth and create any real financial independence, it would be tough to do if you were someones employee.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is a great book that helps put it into perspective.
