These guys want the money up front and when I ask why it's always because they have been screwed on projects before. OK, no problem. I have refernces and I would be willing to give up the AmEx number as collateral, but for G*d's sake, 2-3 k deposit on something they nor I have a clue what it will even look like???
What ever happened to concept designing?

This is where it pays to be well known. I understand your concern but I do the same with my content sales. 100% upfront or I don't even set the shoot up. I have been screwed over in the past and left holding a bag full of custom content that others may never even want.
I have been working with 2 designers lately and neither of them have requested a dime until the projects were complete. Both of them gave me conceptual designs prior to getting too far into it and then we worked from there.
