Lane, they don't actually render the whole movie at once. I have a friend at ILM. He used to work at blur studios. (Right down the street from The FLY's house)
In the back of their studio they have a huge rack unit with like 30 to 40 servers on it. They are all networked to those servers, so when they want to render something it goes into a que, and when a server becomes available, it begins to render. They only render short sequences ata time, and then they just edit all those sequences together.
But a high end dual processor computer could easily do an entire sequence. But it would take a while.
