With general there is always a risk you will never wake up.
Doctors do so many of these operations and consider the actual
work to be easy, so they say it's standard and routine. However
there is always a chance of dying under general. Lots of things
can go wrong, chemical interactions and allergies, incorrectly
placed tubes and needles, drunken doctors, etc. For smokers the
risks are much higher from what I've been told.

Still it's a very small risk. However as said above. There is no
good reason to put your body through this bashing if you can
stay conscious.
