A virus that destroys the system is by far not as scary as the not detected trojan who transmits all my sensitive data over the net. One can be easily restored by a backup the other cannot be fixed.

that's ridiculous. If you keep the software up, unpatched then the chance of your system dying is VERY high. The chance of you getting infected by a trojan before u can update stuff is very low.
Balance the risks.
