The thing you need to check out is the GSM/GPRS. I don't travel much and T-Mobiles coverage is good where I work and live. If you travel a lot to different cities, it may not be so hot. 
 
I use mine every day and it is anything but a paperweight for me. 
The monthly cost for UNLIMITED data is $30. I don't use the phone at all. 
 
It's an option worth considering.

 Yeah, I'm looking at smartphones as an alternative.
Ideal would be to use it as a cell phone as well.  Verizon is my service.
