In the 70's there was a huge uproar of environmentalism.. one of their primary targets was industrial chemicals etc. DDT was in such large usage that they creasted mass histeria about ill-effects.. such as cancer.. with absolutely no backing. However, the up-roar was so large that the U.S government passed a bill banning the use of DDT.

This is very unfortunate because, while not a huge problem in North America, Malaerea is one of the worlds most serious viruses which claims millions of lives annually. Without U.S funding and support of DDT in Malaerea infested countries in Africa a lot of people are dying.
Actually there have been studies done, and DDT does have adverse effects on humans and animals. There is a really famous one written in the 50s that was pretty much responsible for the regulation of pesticides, it's called Silent River or Quiet River, something River. Search on Amazon for "effects of DDT" and you'll find several books on the subject.
