Q: Are there any natural ways of increasing my sperm count?
A: Trying to conceive a child often requires good timing, and a touch of good luck. When fertility issues arise, couples often assume the problem must be a female one. But according to Dr. Kenneth Gelman, a fertility expert at Memorial Regional Hospital, it's often the males who lack the potency for pregnancy.
''Actually about 40 percent of the time there could be a male factor, or component to infertility when we evaluate a couple's problem,'' Gelman said.
And the problem seems to be on the rise. Some studies have even suggested sperm counts are dwindling worldwide. But if you're a man with father fever, there are some things you can do.
If you smoke, stop. Cigarettes constrict the arteries that supply the testicles, and nicotine may be directly toxic to sperm cells. Chronic alcohol consumption also lowers sperm count. Gelman says the rumor about bicycle seats is probably untrue. But when it comes to underwear, it should be boxers not briefs.
'The old wives' tales are probably true, that men who have low sperm counts, should definitely wear boxer shorts,'' he said.
Extra doses of vitamin C, zinc and copper have been shown to help improve sperm motility. A recent study from South America has shown a few cups of coffee each day may have the same effect.
