Below's a shot of Isla Vista where most students live (towns next to/attached to campus) - my home of 3 years is marked. 9,000 college students in one square mile living on or within five blocks of the Pacific. Town is an absolute slum but the location is great.

I can imagine it was cool there. Yet, the drinking... In my experience, it just isn't cool, it sucks actually. One has an evening full of fun (maybe), but wasts the whole day after. When you get back in thought to the evening you drank (even if it were not that much), it wasn't that cool after all. I think many drinkers are losers.
