While I do agree that as a parent I wouldn't just say "Oh well, nothing I can do about it", your way won't work either. I have a daughter (almost 10), and they are just as capable of manipulation. Not to mention, my daughter catches on to that shit REAL quick. "Bribing" your children at that age (18) is only asking for trouble. By then, you have instilled pretty much everything you are going to instill in them. If you were my mom, I was 18, and you were bribing me not to do things you didn't like....you would go broke real fast!
