Also it is important that YOU go and ask to talk to the social services director at your hospital. Ask for any assistance programs and tell them the situation you are in. Depending on your state Adult Family Services are usually able to assist you by some means, and it will be dependent upon you savings and/or income. Im not very familar with California Health Welfare Laws so talk to the social services person BEFORE you check out, and ask them about Adult Family Services and for paper work to qualify.
