I wouldn't leave my kids alone with one, nor would I leave them alone with my collie, but that's beside the point. Any dog can become aggressive when it is trained to fight. Dogs in general are more likely to be aggressive or unpredictable when they are overbred or inbred, as many pits are. However, I don't think it's fair to discriminate against the breed across the board.
Think of it this way: many human children who are abused/molested/neglected become abusive/molest others when they are adults. It's conditioning, and life experience, just as it is with these dogs. Are you going to say we should ban children because kids who are raised in a violent environment become violent adults? No, the answer is to punish the abusers more severely and break the cycle. The owners are the abusers in these cases.
Just my opinion, as you are entitled to yours. But as a pitbull owner I can speak from years of experience with kind, gentle, loving pits. Just my 2 cents.
