Only money in it is setting up your own and getting some suckers to pay you for a glimpse at it.
I was doing this way back in 2000, spidering the yahoo directory every day and watching for good domain drops. It's seriously played out right now, but it was a 500k / year biz for me in 2000/2001

Practically everything is free if you know where to look or how to get it. Not all of these sites are scams. People put a lot of work into building these and deserve to be paid for the effort as well as the convenience it provides you, if you are a domain buyer. You can't really know what you are talking about because you made this statement "crappy domains that the people that own these sites have taken all the best ones out of already". The best names end up back-ordered months in advance, before the domain even expires. They end up in highest-bidder auctions at places like Pool or Namewinner or through private registrars who sell their bandwidth for high costs. Anyone spidering yahoo daily is wasting their time.
