The movie took some pretty liberal artistic license with what actually happened, regardless of the message it conveyed, whatever that may be, or whatever it may have been intended to be.
Many historians (experts in the field) have said the portrayal is innacurate.
Very similar to "A Beautiful Mind," where Ron Howard completely left out that the guy was abusive to his wife and racist. If you ask me, that's very irresponsible movie-making. It's nearly propaganda.
