indeed the answer to all of that is to go through the process once, (portfolio shopping, etc...) real good, find someone you like, and do what you gotta do to sign them to an exclusive deal. It puts to rest the endless hours of shopping aggravation, billing for every last little thing, and you get consistency across all of your projects to better establish your brand identity.
personally, I enjoy being exclusive because it removes a ton of burden from myself as well. No billing for every last little thing, no chasing down non-paying clients, no trying to interpret the ideas of 10 different people every day and move from one brand formula to the next..... so yes, there is a lot of incentive for the designer as well.
