I do some spreading, but mostly what I like. For some niches that just don't do it for me, i've found it's hard to write effective ads. At least until i've practiced a bit. However, i do a lot of other niches too, just to hit some of that traffic. Recently i've found myself relying on too few sponsors and too few niches and profits were down. So i pounded out some other niche stuff on other sponsors and I'm back up again.
But, I think there are some similarities in what surfers are looking for, but many more differences.
