I'll try to explain without getting too technical. Basically, it's like a crown that covers your existing tooth. Where a crown would either completely or 1/2 way replace your natural, a veneer/laminate would replace about 1/4 to 1/3 of your natural tooth. The dentist preps your natural and a veneer is made to fit over it.
Had a case about a month ago where the patient's lower anteriors were really crooked & had a crossbite on 2 teeth. Normally, lazy dentists would be quick to extract a couple teeth & ship him to an orthodontist to slap on braces. Instead, this dentist prepped for veneers and 3 weeks later the patient walked away with straight teeth.
